Why Did Hans Save Elsa

Why did hans save elsa. MAJOR SPOILERS if you havent seen Frozen yet. Elsa is once again at the forefront of Disneys latest Frozen story and Frozen 2 sees a big mystery about Elsa resolved towards the end of the film. It seems to generally be seen as one of the biggest plot holes in the movie as to why Prince Hans would save Elsas live in the Ice Castle when later he reveals that he was planning to kill her all along.
Hans climbs a damn mountain and slays a frost giant to see if Elsa is all right. Hans was desperate for his own place but he wanted the thriving and wealthy port of Arendelle not the iceberg Elsa had inadvertently turned it into. Anna realizes Elsa is.
When Hans refuses to kiss Anna to thaw her Frozen heart he tells her the whole story of why he wanted her to marry him and what his plan for taking over the kingdom was. Hans needs her to turn it back. Why did he save her.
